Collecting Fossil Leaves in the Eocene Green River Formation near Vernal Utah

This is an area that we collected a number of times this past spring and early summer. We would have spent more time there over the past 4 months but the no-see-ums, black gnats, were bad enough that they kept us away for a while. We finally decided to make our way back out to this are to collect some more fossil leaves and a few insects. We spent two days collecting and about 10 hours driving, but it is always worth while.

This time we took an old friend, and his family, along with us. Don Lind, the only Astronaut that I know, has been out with us on the occasional fossil collecting trip over the past 15 years. This time he brought with him quite a few members of his family. They all had a great time learning about these fossils and collecting them. The good thing about leaves is that they tend to be quite plentiful. Once you get into the good zone, almost every rock has something on it. So everyone was able to take some fossils of their own home with them.

On the morning of our first day out we scouted out this site. The exposure is perfect, almost no digging required

Don Lind and his family left late on Friday afternoon and Val and I stayed another day. We scouted out another spot and decided to try our luck. As usual though it all starts with a lot of digging and clearing of overburden.

One of the many beautiful views that were around us.

This slab was literally covered with insects, the small dark spots on the rock. We gave this piece the the Utah Field House of Natural History in Vernal on our way home.

Val clearing off a very nice sized slab. If you want to get slabs with lots of leaves on them you have to get big slabs.
An example of one of the nice pieces that we pulled up. There were actually a half dozen leaves on this piece.

A very nice Macginetea.

One of the large slabs that we pulled out. It was about 3" thick too. This one made us work a little bit. Unfortunately there weren't too many leaves in this one.
