Collecting Ordovician Graptolites in Central Idaho

This is a location that we don't visit too often. Not because it isn't very good or because it is too far away, "only" 4 hrs., but because we usually find enough in one trip to satisfy our appetite for graptolites. I suspect that we typically bring home a couple thousand of them. The drive and the scenery are beautiful and the fossils are a nice reward after a long drive.

This is the small area where we have found the best graptolites. The formation that we are collecting in is the Phi Kappa Formation.

Another view of our small quarry. It was a little bigger by the end of the day.

A decent slab of graptolites. When we get into the right layer we can find three, four, and occasionally five species of graptolites on a single slab.
