Collecting the Middle Cambrian Spence Shale at Miners Hollow

This is one of the places that we have been literally hundreds of times. But this time had a little more meaning than many trips. We were collecting with Mike and Linda McCollum from Eastern Washington University. After many, many, years the Spence Shale is finally going to be systematically worked to describe the numerous trilobite species that occur. This was the first step. As it stands I think that there are right close to 100 different species of trilobites found in the Spence Shale in Northern Utah and South Eastern Idaho. Over the next five years I hope to post many of these trips that we take with the McCollums. We have been collecting with them for literally 30+ years and it has been a great pleasure for us to aid them in any way that we can. This site is one of the original Spence Shale localities collected by Walcott many years ago.

The view from the bottom. It takes less than an hour if you are taking your time.

Textbook crossbedding in the Brigham Quartzite.
The view from the top down. My Dad was working right underneath this cliff that I was standing on.
.Mike & Linda McCollum spent most of the day measuring the sectioin while we collected specimens for them.

View across the canyon. Most of the tailings that you see are form our workings over the past 30+ years.

Looking back toward Brigham City.

On the way down with the Spence Shale right behind us.

The vehicles sure are a long way down there.
Dad looking back up the mountain and admiring the view.
View from the bottom. The hike down isn't bad, but it can be hard on the knees. A day well spent and we brought back a few nice specimens.
