Collecting Geodes in western Utah

This is our first trip to this location in three or four years. This is a little know site that has plenty of geodes on the surface still. Many are rotted out and are no good, but there are still plenty of quality geodes to be found either by digging or by poking around. Most of these geodes have flourencent minerals in them, which we like. One of the common minerals is hyalite.

Val and McKinley using an Estwing Geo/Paleo Pick to pop geodes out of a pit.

The matrix is soft enough that most geodes come out with very little effort.
Sometimes they come out in multiples.
We also break a fair share of them when popping them out. You can see the minerals inside.
Though we did not see another person or vehicle all day long we had plenty of company. The lizards were plentiful and very lively.
Where one of the zones of geodes cross the road. The road in this location is litteraly "paved" with geodes. Nearly every rock is a geode or at least a part of one.
A couple of beauties.

After a few hours of collecting we had enough to call it good. I think we loaded about 8 buckets worth of geodes into the back of the truck.
Homeward bound.
